Season 2
S2|E8: Beyond the Pitch | Youth, Sports + Leadership
Sport participation is a powerful vehicle for developing leadership and other important life skills in young people. In a paper authored by Michigan State University’s Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, Professor Daniel R. Gould noted the unique attributes of sports aligned with leadership development, including working with teammates to pursue common goals, navigating relationships with diverse individuals, learning to identify strengths and weaknesses, openness to criticism, and persistence. Joined by Tory Bailey (who began working with the Pete Brown Junior Tennis Program (PBJTP) to develop a community tennis program for non-traditional high school players), Amanda Harrinauth (a multi-sport athlete competing with the Special Olympics), Dillon Shije (an Indigenous Advocacy NGO advancing Indigenous rights and opportunity for Indigenous Peoples and a professional runner and Division I XC National Champion), Coach Duane Carlisle (former Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the San Francisco 49ers and owner of Carlisle Performance Systems (CPS)), and Marlene Bjornsrud (who served for 20 years as CEO of the Bay Area Women’s Sport Initiative (BAWSI)).
S2|E7: Gender, Sexuality, and Inclusion in Sports
Gender, Sexuality, and Inclusion in Sports – June 23, 2022; marked the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. Through June’s designation as LGBTQ Pride Month, we also honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising as a tipping point for the LGBTQ movement. But, unfortunately, sex segregation in sports is as old as sports themselves and it remains an issue today. Our panel includes “Mr. No Days Off” Fred Rosser [(he/him), better known by his WWE ring name “Darren Young”, a WWE Superstar Veteran, and the first WWE wrestler to come out publicly while still signed with the company], Dr. Justine Siegal [(she/her) who became the first woman to coach for a Major League Baseball Organization (Oakland Athletics, 2015)], Colton Gibbons [(he/they) an Award winning Executive Director and published international author focused on mission building and increasing the value of key programs centered around BIPOC, Immigrant and Gender-Diverse communities], Cyd Zeigler [has been writing about LGBTQ athletes and issues in sports since 1999, when he co-founded Outsports.com, the world's leading LGBTQ sports site], and Meg Adler [a Jewish educator and illustrator born, she founded her illustration company Letters, Aligned, in 2014 and, in 2021, launched Turn It - a collection of reflections, arguments, and teachings from her perspective as a Jewish educator].
S2|E6: Sports in Support of Mental Health
“Sports Addressing Mental Health” – We focus on the role that sports plays in helping us navigate the most challenging of moments as we manage our mental health and wellness - personally, professionally, and globally. Joined by Asante Cleveland (retired NFL Tight End), Star Wright (a football entrepreneur with 14 years’ experience in playing women’s tackle football and 10 years as an All-American and Team USA gold medalist linebacker), Rob Balucas (the founder and Chief Creative Catalyst at babaLucas Creative, he was thrust into extraordinary circumstances in 2015 when a cycling accident rendered him paraplegic), Jared Muela (the Director of Corporate Philanthropy for Electronic Arts (EA)), and Dan Pasternack (a published author, Dan worked over a decade as an analyst, paraplanner and operations manager before taking the leap and opening up his own advisory firm in 2015).
S2|E5: Another Path | Sports Intercepting the Pipeline to Prison
What role does sports play in intercepting the pipeline to prison? Season Two Episode Five of the Athletes' Voices Speaker Series was a conversation with Michael Wilhoite (NFL Legend and Los Angeles Chargers Coach), Tiffany-Dawn Sykes (Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for varsity sports at Dartmouth College), Estefani Herrera (youth second chances advocate at Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY)), Dr. Cassidy Higgins (Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY)), and Professor Kalyn McDonough (postdoctoral fellow with the Partnership for Healthy Communities at the University of Delaware and UNESCO Core International Faculty at Pennsylvania State University), as they have a provocative conversation on the role sports plays in intercepting the pipeline to prison.
S2|E4 The Role of Sports in Addiction & Recovery
Addiction. It can happen to anyone. But how do we face ourselves? How do we face reality? No matter what, you are never alone. Join Randy Grimes (NFL Legend), Joe Nedney (NFL Legend), Mike (Kanellis) Bennett (former WWE Superstar), Blu Robinson (Addict II Athlete), and Chase Wade (J. Flowers Health Institute), in Season Two Episode Four of the Athletes' Voices Speaker Series, as they discuss the role of sports in addiction and recovery.
S2| E3: " Politically Speaking | Sports & Social Discourse”
Sport + Social Impact. How powerful is this relationship? Where does this intersection lie? What is your role? Athletes have a long history of political activism that has created provocative conversations and meaningful change. We had the privilege of being joined by Eric Reid (NFL Legend), Tianna Bartoletta (3x Olympic Champion), Dr. Jen Welter (the first ever female coach in the NFL ), and Dr. Richard Lapchick (lifelong activist and founder of The Institute for Sport & Social Justice) for an amazing conversation around the role sports can play in support of political activism; all moderated by our very own founder – Joanne Pasternack.
S2|E2: Athletes as Students | Sport, Studies & Name, Image, Likeness (NIL)
But what about athletes as students? Most former college athletes say that being part of a team helped prepare them for life after college. For the vast majority, a career as a professional athlete will not happen. So what is next? And how do colleges with athletics make a commitment to life-after-sports? Join Ainsley McAllister (Founder/CEO, URU; former University of Michigan student/athlete; retired professional athlete - Field Hockey), Sydni Scott (Current Columbia University student/athlete, track and field), McCall Hall (University of Southern California [USC], Director, Community Outreach - USC Athletics), and moderator Frederick Marx (“Hoop Dreams” Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmaker/director/writer, chronicling student-athlete dreams in basketball) as they discuss their experiences as student-athletes, student-athlete advocates and how they are using their voice to increase conversations around the role of schools to support athletes and athletes to prioritize school.
S2|E1: Hear Our Voices | 2020/2021 + the Impact of Athlete Activism
A year has passed since the Athletes’ Voices Speaker Series (formerly Pitch for Change) launched with a look at the history of sports elevating social justice, social impact and philanthropic discussions. One year later, where do we stand? How did athletes' factor into conversations surrounding the tumultuous events of 2020/2021 - a global pandemic, racial reckoning, political upheaval, economic instability, educational disruption, increased wealth inequity and more? And what does the road ahead look like as we move towards the end of 2021?
In collaboration with Athletes’ Voices founding partner, the Walton Family Foundation (WFF), moderator Caryl Stern - Executive Director of WFF and former CEO of UNICEF USA - will lead a lively conversation with athletes, thought leaders and academics to examine the pivotal role sports, athletes and their critics played in the politics and policies of 2020/2021.
Season 1
Athletes as Leaders | powered by LinkedIn
What do a disproportionate number of CEOs have in common? They played sports when they were younger. Join LinkedIn and Athletes’ Voices changemakers for a conversation focused on the unique characteristics of athletes that increase their fitness for leadership roles in all areas of business, philanthropy, sport, education, government and more. Watch Zaza Pachulia (NBA Legend), Leslie Osborne Lewis (Former Midfielder for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and the Chicago Red Stars), Mike Tauiliili Brown (Former NFL Player and CEO of Win-Win), and Josh Dixon (Former Team USA gymnast) join Joseph Milord (Senior Editor at LinkedIn News) and Joanne Pasternack (Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Athletes’ Voices) to discuss Athletes as Leaders. This conversation focused on why the data included in the Ernst & Young report - “With inherent confidence, leadership skills and the drive to work as a high-performing team, athletes add tremendous value for our business, our clients and our people.” - is not only accurate, but crucial for the success of enterprise into the future.
Gun Violence | Awareness + Promoting Change Through Sports
“We need common sense gun laws to help thwart the horror of the gun violence that occurs daily in our country. Enough is enough. The young people will win, and thank God, because the old people have let us down on this issue for too long.” (Golden State Warriors Head Coach and Everytown Advocate, Steve Kerr)
In its eighth installment, Pitch for Change has curated a fascinating group of influencers who shared their first-hand accounts, professional perspective and suggested action items around sports as a conduit for awareness and action related to gun control and violence in our communities. Play Equity | Access to Physical Education and Youth Sports: A Social Justice Issue
“Participating in youth sports can positively affect feelings of enjoyment; influence perceived competence, confidence, and self-esteem; and provide an avenue for the development of social skills, teamwork, leadership, and life skills.” (National Youth Sports Strategy, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
In communities and populations where there is a lack of access, the impact is striking. Never has the need been greater than it is right now. In a post-COVID world, the divide between youth with and without access to resources has increased, the prevalence of social-emotional challenges is staggering and all-encompassing and the rate of obesity is continuing to skyrocket. A provocative and action-oriented conversation, featured athletes and practitioners who are on the front lines of this important topic: Marsha Blount (Chief Executive Officer of the Women’s American Basketball Association (WABA)), Phaidra Knight (President of the Women’s Sports Foundation and 18-year member of the U.S. Women’s National Rugby team), Brandon A. Equity + Inclusion | Rising Up Together - Trailblazers in Sports
What does it mean to be a trailblazer for inclusion? Equity? To stand on the shoulders of those who came before you … and those who will follow? This is an important and timely discussion on the role athletes and sports play as champions for equity and inclusion, standing on the shoulders of those who came before them while lifting up the next generation of leaders for change. This fascinating group of influencers shared their first-hand accounts, professional perspective and suggested action items around sports as a conduit for awareness around diversity, equity and inclusion.
GOALS FOR THE EARTH | GREEN SPORTS | Voices for Sustainability, Environmentalism and Natural Resources
The air runners breathe when competing in a marathon. Surfers on the shore, searching for the best possible waves to ride. Snowfall in November creating a pristine pathway for a cross country skier. An ice climber scaling a mountain. A soccer team taking the pitch, cleats gliding across the perfectly manicured turf enhanced by recent rainfall. Hikers. Long jumpers. A game of pick up basketball. Pentathletes and their equestrian partners jumping. Earth, wind, water, fire - the basic elements of nature required to sustain life - in balance are essential for an athlete to achieve peak performance. With this fourth installment of our Pitch for Change Speaker Series, Athletes' Voices continues to inspire impact and amplify athletes' voices as influencers around a wide range of topics, including conservation, sustainability and the environment. This fascinating group of influencers shared their first-hand accounts, professional perspective and suggested action items around sports as a conduit for mental health and emotional well-being - along with the pitfalls of competing at the highest levels.
ATHLETES + VOTER ENGAGEMENT | Voting + Political Activism + Involvement
The right to vote. Vote by mail. Vote in person. The DESIRE to vote. Does my vote count? How can I ensure that my voice is heard? Blue? Red? Third party? Anyone but ...? The second installment of our Pitch for Change Speaker Series will explore these questions and more. Featuring speakers currently on the frontlines of voter engagement - including athletes, influencers, academics, faith leaders, and legal experts - the webcast will be an unparalleled opportunity to gain historical perspective, real time insight and suggestions for how you can take action now.
