Beyond the Pitch | Youth, Sports + Leadership
S2|E8: Beyond the Pitch | Youth, Sports + Leadership
Sport participation is a powerful vehicle for developing leadership and other important life skills in young people. In a paper authored by Michigan State University’s Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, Professor Daniel R. Gould noted the unique attributes of sports aligned with leadership development, including working with teammates to pursue common goals, navigating relationships with diverse individuals, learning to identify strengths and weaknesses, openness to criticism, and persistence. Joined by Tory Bailey (who began working with the Pete Brown Junior Tennis Program (PBJTP) to develop a community tennis program for non-traditional high school players), Amanda Harrinauth (a multi-sport athlete competing with the Special Olympics), Dillon Shije (an Indigenous Advocacy NGO advancing Indigenous rights and opportunity for Indigenous Peoples and a professional runner and Division I XC National Champion), Coach Duane Carlisle (former Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the San Francisco 49ers and owner of Carlisle Performance Systems (CPS)), and Marlene Bjornsrud (who served for 20 years as CEO of the Bay Area Women’s Sport Initiative (BAWSI)).
Gender Identity & Competitive Sport
S2|E7: Gender, Sexuality, and Inclusion in Sports
Gender, Sexuality, and Inclusion in Sports – June 23, 2022; marked the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. Through June’s designation as LGBTQ Pride Month, we also honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising as a tipping point for the LGBTQ movement. But, unfortunately, sex segregation in sports is as old as sports themselves and it remains an issue today. Our panel includes “Mr. No Days Off” Fred Rosser [(he/him), better known by his WWE ring name “Darren Young”, a WWE Superstar Veteran, and the first WWE wrestler to come out publicly while still signed with the company], Dr. Justine Siegal [(she/her) who became the first woman to coach for a Major League Baseball Organization (Oakland Athletics, 2015)], Colton Gibbons [(he/they) an Award winning Executive Director and published international author focused on mission building and increasing the value of key programs centered around BIPOC, Immigrant and Gender-Diverse communities], Cyd Zeigler [has been writing about LGBTQ athletes and issues in sports since 1999, when he co-founded Outsports.com, the world's leading LGBTQ sports site], and Meg Adler [a Jewish educator and illustrator born, she founded her illustration company Letters, Aligned, in 2014 and, in 2021, launched Turn It - a collection of reflections, arguments, and teachings from her perspective as a Jewish educator].
Elevating Mental Health Through Sports
S2|E6: Sports in Support of Mental Health
“Sports Addressing Mental Health” – We focus on the role that sports plays in helping us navigate the most challenging of moments as we manage our mental health and wellness - personally, professionally, and globally. Joined by Asante Cleveland (retired NFL Tight End), Star Wright (a football entrepreneur with 14 years’ experience in playing women’s tackle football and 10 years as an All-American and Team USA gold medalist linebacker), Rob Balucas (the founder and Chief Creative Catalyst at babaLucas Creative, he was thrust into extraordinary circumstances in 2015 when a cycling accident rendered him paraplegic), Jared Muela (the Director of Corporate Philanthropy for Electronic Arts (EA)), and Dan Pasternack (a published author, Dan worked over a decade as an analyst, paraplanner and operations manager before taking the leap and opening up his own advisory firm in 2015).

We had the privilege of being joined by Eric Reid (NFL Legend), Tianna Bartoletta (3x Olympic Champion), Dr. Jen Welter (the first ever female coach in the NFL ), and Dr. Richard Lapchick (lifelong activist and founder of The Institute for Sport & Social Justice) for an amazing conversation around the role sports can play in support of political activism; all moderated by our very own founder – Joanne Pasternack.
Athletes as Students | Sport, Studies & Name/Image/Likeness (NIL)
S2|E2: Athletes as Students | Sport, Studies & Name, Image, Likeness (NIL)
But what about athletes as students? Most former college athletes say that being part of a team helped prepare them for life after college. For the vast majority, a career as a professional athlete will not happen. So what is next? And how do colleges with athletics make a commitment to life-after-sports? Join Ainsley McAllister (Founder/CEO, URU; former University of Michigan student/athlete; retired professional athlete - Field Hockey), Sydni Scott (Current Columbia University student/athlete, track and field), McCall Hall (University of Southern California [USC], Director, Community Outreach - USC Athletics), and moderator Frederick Marx (“Hoop Dreams” Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmaker/director/writer, chronicling student-athlete dreams in basketball) as they discuss their experiences as student-athletes, student-athlete advocates and how they are using their voice to increase conversations around the role of schools to support athletes and athletes to prioritize school.
Hear Our Voices | 2020/2021 + the Impact of Athlete Activism
S2|E1: Hear Our Voices | 2020/2021 + the Impact of Athlete Activism
A year has passed since the Athletes’ Voices Speaker Series (formerly Pitch for Change) launched with a look at the history of sports elevating social justice, social impact and philanthropic discussions. One year later, where do we stand? How did athletes' factor into conversations surrounding the tumultuous events of 2020/2021 - a global pandemic, racial reckoning, political upheaval, economic instability, educational disruption, increased wealth inequity and more? And what does the road ahead look like as we move towards the end of 2021?
In collaboration with Athletes’ Voices founding partner, the Walton Family Foundation (WFF), moderator Caryl Stern - Executive Director of WFF and former CEO of UNICEF USA - will lead a lively conversation with athletes, thought leaders and academics to examine the pivotal role sports, athletes and their critics played in the politics and policies of 2020/2021.
